Car rental guide
What to check before you rent, in general terms. Each offer's rental terms give the exact rules.
Airport desks are the easy choice after a flight and often open early and late, but many add an airport fee. City branches can cost less if you don't need the car on the first day, though their hours are usually shorter. Search both and compare the totals.
Most rental companies hold a security deposit on a credit card in the main driver's name when you collect the car, and release it after you return it. Debit cards are not always accepted, so check the payment terms of your offer before you travel.
The usual minimum age is 21, and drivers under 25 often pay a young driver fee. Some car groups and countries set higher limits. Bring a full driving licence; if it is not in the Latin alphabet, or the country asks for one, you will also need an International Driving Permit.
Picking up in one place and returning in another suits road trips and airport-to-city journeys. Enter a different drop-off location in the search. A one-way fee is common, and taking the car across a border needs the rental company's permission.
Check the fuel policy: full-to-full is usually the fairest. Look at the mileage limit if you plan long drives. Child seats, extra drivers and GPS are normally paid at the counter, so add them to your budget.
Have your licence, the card for the deposit and your booking confirmation ready. Walk around the car and photograph any damage before you drive off, and note the fuel level. If your flight is late, let the rental desk know.
Frequently Asked Questions
Short answers to common questions about renting a car.
How do I book a rental car?
Enter the pick-up airport or city, your dates and times, and search. You will see the cars and rental companies available for those dates; choose one and complete the booking. There is no booking fee.
Can I return the car to a different location?
Yes. Enter a different drop-off location when you search. Many rental companies charge a one-way fee, which you can check in the offer before you book.
How old do I have to be to rent a car?
Usually at least 21. Drivers under 25 often pay a young driver fee, and some car groups and countries have higher minimum ages. The exact rule is in each offer's rental terms.
What do I need to pick up the car?
A full driving licence for every driver, a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit, and your booking confirmation. Visitors from abroad may also need an International Driving Permit.
Is it cheaper to rent at the airport or in the city?
It depends on the place and the dates. Airport locations are convenient but often include an airport fee; city branches can be cheaper but have shorter opening hours. Search both to compare.
Is car hire the same as car rental?
Yes. Car hire is the usual term in the UK, Ireland and Australia, and car rental in the US and Canada. Both mean renting a car for a set period and driving it yourself.
